Create a Summer Fun List
Every year we create a summer fun list. We add things we want to do individually, ideas our kids suggest, and activities we like to do every summer to keep traditions going.
We go to at least one baseball game, hit up the local swimming pool, and take a family camping trip (we cabin camp because of the air conditioning). I like to list parks or shops that we have known about but haven’t had a chance to visit. We include festivals, new restaurants, and amusement parks. We also add low cost or free summer ideas such as picnics, kite flying, snowcones, and running through the yard with the sprinklers on.
Any free admission or discounted entry days are included for the zoo and the movie theater. Many theaters have a summer package where kid movies are shown during the weekday at discounted prices. We end up being tourists in our city all summer long and we love it.
Questions to start your summer fun list:
- What do you want to do with your free time this summer?
- Where do you want to go?
- Who do you want to spend time with?
- What is something new you could try?
- What do you want to learn?
- Who could you help?
- How could you be challenged this summer?
- What one thing or activity would make you happy this summer?
Ideas with Spouse = Summertime Romance
The summer is a fun time for Brent and I to do some things we normally don’t have time to do. Touring mansions, checking out new districts of our city, strolling gardens, catching concerts, eating at new restaurants, touring museums, and watching plays–whatever sparks interest add it to the list.
The simple little things in summer are sometimes what make it so special. We make sure to have cookouts with friends, lots of porch sitting, visits with family, bike rides, movies at the drive-in theater, and just hanging out in the backyard.
Summer Ideas for Kids = Hours of Entertainment
Many local libraries offer a Summer Reading Program. We enjoy participating and it ensures we make trips to the library. Even our youngest, who can’t read, can join based on the books we read to him. Some libraries give prizes at the end of the summer based on how many hours you read. One year I won the grand prize for my age group, a Kindle Fire!
It’s always interesting to see what our kids say they would like to do for their summer fun list. Chucky Cheese would be on every.list.possible. Though most of the time they are satisfied with simple things like popsicles and playdates–thank goodness. Then other times it is extreme like requesting 8 hours of T.V. a day! Another idea is making little bags to give to the homeless community in our city or baking cookies to deliver to a neighbor. Both are great ways to get your kids involved in helping others. Also, our kids enjoy attending Vacation Bible School at our church. They get to see their friends, play fun games and, learn about God plus eat creative snacks.
If you have a school-aged child encourage them to fill out a list themselves. It’s always interesting to find out what ideas and dreams they have brewing.
It is amazing how many things on our list get accomplished. By having a written list we can all easily glance at it to figure out evening or weekend plans.
Here are two free printable Summer Fun Lists for you. I hope you print one (or both) right away and get started dreaming about what you want to do this summer.
