How I Finally Tackled the Dishes with a Routine and Won

I’m not sure where you are in your journey for an orderly home but this is an area that’s been a big obstacle for me. This is where I was about 4 years ago. Daily. I had no hope of ever getting ahead or staying caught up with the dishes.

I have good news to share! This is no longer “normal” in our home. Yes, there are days and times when the sink is overflowing but most of the time it’s under control. I can’t even believe I am typing these words. Here are a few things I did that helped.

Create a Summer Fun List

Every year we create a summer fun list. We add things we want to do individually, ideas our kids suggest, and activities we like to do every summer to keep traditions going.

We go to at least one baseball game, hit up the local swimming pool, and take a family camping trip (we cabin camp because of the air conditioning). I like to list parks or shops that we have known about but haven’t had a chance to visit. We include festivals, new restaurants, and amusement parks. We also add low cost or free summer ideas such as picnics, kite flying, snowcones, and running through the yard with the sprinklers on.

A friend, Sarah, taught me years and years ago. It blew my mind when she first showed it to me. It’s a way to wear your hair down but keeps the front of your hair staying neat all day. Also, if your ears tend to stick out with hair tucked behind them (like mine do) then you’ll love this even more.
